about

"Jewelry Rap Productions strike gold again with the latest LP from North Carolina producer Pleasant Sherman. Sporting eighteen tracks, this project is a masterful set of beats and guest raps from another of the South East’s finest.

Although the first track ‘Uncle Al’ establishes a specific agenda with its opening monologue, the song itself is a very smooth, laid-back experience. It’s immediately followed by ‘Where the Bread At’, one of the longest songs and a pretty sinister piano piece. Another audio sample closes out this one, establishing a theme of fighting violence and oppression that gives real weight to the choppy beats and harsh raps on show here.

Live the Poet is the album’s first guest artist, he tears up ‘Zenith’ with incredible ferocity. Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon turns up on ‘Outta My Hands at This Point’ to deliver a typically charismatic performance over Sherman’s drumless loop, uniting Jewelry Rap under one banner and serving as a real centerpiece of the record. The instrumental cuts are no less vital, and on tracks like ‘Dreary’ and ‘ALAKA!!!’, things take a turn for the miserable. The latter track in particular is a real gloomy number, the sample conveying an immense sadness in its warped, loop-addled form.

The brilliantly named ‘Joycon Drift’ opens with yet another audio excerpt before launching into a sultry, shimmering production that might just be Sherman’s nicest in the entire tracklist. There’s a couple more features from here on out (including two from Brainorchestra), but the real highlights remain those that come solely from Sherman himself. ‘Today’ is gloriously celebratory, while ‘I Feel Like Making Dreams’ is the stand-out song of the last third thanks to another brilliantly-placed piece of dialogue and a gorgeous vocal loop.

When the 18 track project concludes with ‘The Minotaur Man’, there’s a real sense that the entire thing was crafted with the intention of making far more than just a beat tape or even a collection of songs. This is an album in the strictest sense of the word, a titanic victory for a producer that deserves far more shine and a must-listen for those seeking a truly enthralling hip-hop experience that brims with the spirit of revolution." -Chris Aylward
